Rules and Setup:
To start, place the game board in the middle of the table. Shuffle all “3-Gold” cards, place them face down below Morisot Banque, and reveal two cards. Place all “5-Gold” cards face up in a stack below Cassa Reserve. Place the orange “1” Cost token in Megan Galerie, and randomly place one of the remaining orange Cost tokens in each of the other three galleries. Place the remaining four orange Cost tokens on the track above Megan Galerie, in increasing order from left to right. Finally, place the eight white Cost tokens on the matching number spaces above the galleries.
The player who visited a museum most recently is the starting player.
Each player takes a Player Aid board and the five gold cards with their player number, placing them face down in the Draw Pile section of their Player Aid board. The staring player takes the gold cards with P1, the next player takes the cards with P2, etc. Takes all player tokens of one color, and places one of them in the 0 VP space on the game board. Optional: Takes a set of five painting genre tokens and places them in the “1 gold” value space on left of their Player Aid board. These tokens reflect the gold value of the matching token on market range (MR) board. (This provides the player with a personal reference to keep track of the Market Rating of each type of painting, mirroring the main board.)
Place the MR board next to the game board. Place a set of five paintings genre tokens and the gold token (orange disc) on the 0 space.
5. Shuffle all Painting cards face-down. a. Deal Painting cards face-up to all galleries until there are three in each gallery. b. Deal five Painting cards face down to each players’ draw pile. c. Place the deck of the remaining Painting cards face-down on the game board.
6. Randomly place one end-game bonus card face up in each of the five exhibitions.
7. Invitation tokens. Place three sets of painting genre tokens (15) and six black wild tokens in the pouch, then randomly draw and place these tokens in the 19 exhibition invitation spaces. (There will be 2 tokens le in the bag when you are done.)
8. Any remaining items, such as additional Player Aid boards, player tokens, and the two paintings genre tokens and ten end game bonus cards will not be used this game and can be placed back in the box.
9. All players should review their cards in their draw pile, especially the types of Painting cards they have received. Then, all players shuffle their decks, place them in their “Draw Pile” area, and draw five cards to their hand.
The theme of the game is art collecting and selling.
The main mechanic of this game is deck building. Deck building/Pool building refers to a collection of related mechanisms. Players have a personal pool, or collection, of cards or tokens, that provide different actions and/or resources. A subset of those cards/tokens is randomly drawn each turn. An important aspect of the game lies in managing the contents of that pool by adding and removing cards and tokens over the course of the gameplay, often through the very actions provided by the cards/tokens themselves. Over time, players build decks/pools that are more and more specialized and effective towards some purpose(s), typically including claiming victory objectives. Deck/pool-building may be the central mechanism of a game, or it may be one part of a larger system.
The game begins with the starting player taking the first turn, then each player takes a turn in a clockwise direction. Each turn, the active player can take two actions. There are three types of action: Haggle, Acquire, and Show. The active player may take two different actions in any order or may take the same type of action twice.
HAGGLE – Spend 1 card to draw 2 cards. ● Choose any card in your hand and place it face up in an action section (above your player aid board), then draw two cards from your draw pile to your hand. ● The type of card spent has no effect on the Haggle action. Any me during the game, if your need to draw a card, and your draw pile is empty, shuffle all cards in your discard pile to form a new draw pile.
ACQUIRE – Buy 1 card in the Promenade. ● Pay the cost shown for one of the locations in the Promenade, then take any one face-up card from that location. You may pay higher than the listed cost, but you do not receive any change or benefit from the overpayment.
1. Pay the cost by placing the Painting and/or Gold cards from your hand into an Acon second. ▪ The cost to be paid is to the le of the location name.
2 ▪ The value of Painting cards spent is based on their current genre gold value, as shown on the MR board. Paintings of all genres are worth 1 gold at the beginning of the game. 2. Aer paying the cost, take the Acquired card and place it in the same action section.
3. Finally, advance the MR token that matches the genre of the Painng card Acquired. ▪ The MR value increase is shown to the right of the locaon name. a. For example Audria Galerie has a cost of 3 gold and MR +3. There is a yellow, a blue and a purple Painng card in the gallery. Each Painng card costs 3 gold to purchase. The acve player has three red portraits Painng cards and two “2-Gold” cards in hand. The red (portrait) genre currently has a value of 2 gold, so all red Painng cards are worth 2 gold. The acve player decides to Acquire a blue seascape Painng card from Audria Galerie. The player pays the cost by placing two red Painng cards (two red Painngs x 2 gold = 4 gold) in ACTION 1, and takes the blue Painng card from Audria Gallerie, placing it in the same acon secon. Finally, they advance the blue (Seascape) genre MR token three spaces.
When taking two Acquire actions on the same turn, the player must make their second purchase in a different location from the first. a. For example, the same player would like to use their second action to buy a “3-Gold” card, which is only available in Morisot Banque. Each costs 6 gold with MR +3. The player pays the cost by placing a red Painting card and two “2-Gold” cards in ACTION 2, then takes one of the face-up “3-Gold” cards from Morisot Banque and places it in the same Action second. Finally, they advance the Gold MR token three spaces.
SHOW – Exhibit a Painting in the Museum.
1. Pay the cost to place one of your Paintings in one of the exhibitions in the Museum, by placing Painting and/or Gold cards from your hand in an action second. ▪ The cost to display a Painting is to the le of the exhibition name. ▪ Gold cards are worth their printed value. The value of Painting cards is based on the current MR rang of their genre, as above. ▪ You may pay higher than the listed cost, but you do not receive any change or benefit from the overpayment.
2. Aer paying the cost, take a Painting card from your hand and place it on the board, under the target exhibition. The Painting color must match one of the available invitations (color cubes) in the exhibition. A black cube is wild and can match any color of Painting.
3. Place your meeple on the upper right of the Painting card.
4. Take the invitation cube that matches the Painting genre color, and place it on the highest available VP space under the exhibition then add the number of VP printed to your score. ▪ If there are a matching color invitations and a black (wild) cube, you can choose to take either one.
5. If this is your first me exhibiting a Painting (i.e. you do not already have a meeple placed in the bonus area), choose one of the available New Exhibitor bonuses by placing one of your meeples on an open bonus space. (You cannot select a space that already has a meeple on it.) ▪ There are two types of New Exhibitor bonuses: ● A Cost Discount is applied when paying for the exhibition. ● A VP bonus is scored immediately on the scoring track.
6. Finally, advance the MR token that matches the genre of the Painting card exhibited. ▪ The MR increase value is to the right of the exhibition name.
Artwork and Components:
Due to this being a prototype I can’t talk components quality, but I can talk both the art. The art feels fresh. So many times the same or similar artwork gets recycled between several games. The use of the background colors to seperate the types of cards works perfectly.
That I have to wait for the retail version.
For me this a very unique deckbuilding experience. What really grabs me is that the paintings in your hand are worth their current market rating, which is represented on a separate board that sits next to the main board. As you spend cards from your hand to acquire a new painting, that painting genre goes up in its market rating. I have never played a deck builder that raises the value of the cards in your deck. It really changes your mindset and strategy from a standard deck builder. I am 100% backing this game. It’s a unique experience.
